Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium

The fruit or fruiting body is the actual mushroom. The Mycelium is somewhat like the root system. Many mushroom supplements are made from the mycelium grown on sterilized rice or grain. They grind this “grain spawn” into a powder. They have some active compounds, but the levels are low because they are mixed with the grain.

Mushrooms

Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Fosters the production of the bioprotein nerve growth factor (NGF) and myelin (an insulation around nerve fibers), both of these are crucial to brain health.  Has been shown to improve cognition in a small human study, improve memory in mice, increase concentration, and alleviate anxiety and irritability.  Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Boosts activity of the intestinal immune system.  Animals with diabetes had lower blood sugar levels and reduced nerve pain.

Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis)
K
nown for being stimulating—for both energy and libido.  It can help the body utilize oxygen more efficiently and enhance blood flow, improve exercise tolerance and athletic performance, and speed up post-workout muscle recovery.  High in antioxidants. May inhibit growth of cancer cells. Shown to decrease blood sugar by mimicking the action of insulin.  Approved in China for heart arrhythmias.

Reishi (Ganodema lucidum)
Nature’s Xanax.  Triterpene in Reishi may alleviate anxiety, ease depression, and encourage better sleep and sharper focus. Increases natural killer (NK) cell activity, increases low white blood cell count, improves lymphocyte function.  Decreased fatigue and improved well-being.

Shiitake (Lentinul edodes)
Lowers LDL in mice, and contains compounds that inhibit the absorption and production of cholesterol in the liver.  They contain phytonutrients which aid in preventing plaque build-up, and in a rat study, maintained healthy blood pressure and circulation. Antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Heals chromosome damage caused by cancer treatments.  Improves gut immunity.

Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor)
Contains a compound called polysaccharide-K (PSK) that stimulates the immune system.  PSK is an approved anticancer prescription drug in Japan.  Turkey tail has been shown to improve the survival rate of people with certain cancers, fight leukemia cells, and improve the immune system of people receiving chemotherapy.

Agaricus (Agaricus Blazei Murill)
Contains beta-glucans which help modulate the immune system and detoxify heavy metals, may improve insulin resistance in diabetes, improves liver function in Hepatitis B.

Chaga (Inonotes obliquus)
An antioxidant powerhouse, which combats oxidative stress, may prevent or slow the growth of cancer, and lowers LDL (“bad” cholesterol). Slows the growth of various cancer cells, regulates the production of cytokines, which may help control inflammation, decrease blood sugar in diabetes.

Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
An adaptogen, which assists the body in fighting against any type of mental of physical difficulty, regulating systems of the body that have become imbalanced.  Rich in anti-oxidants and beta-glucans.  Suppresses tumor growth, increases immune cells. Decrease glucose levels in diabetes.
